The Albanian Human Rights Group (AHRG), supported by the “SOROS” Foundation, held an activity “On the integration and legal protection of paraplegic and tetraplegic people”. The Albanian legislation on the status of the disabled and their participation in central government, local government and social life has been closely monitored.
The organizers remarked that there is a total exclusion of the disabled peopled from the administration in all the levels, there is a lack of treatment of their problems and difficulties from the media and there are gaps in the legal framework.
To change this situation, AHRG observed the policies applied in the central and local government level with the paraplegic and tetraplegic people, and, based on some of their problems, organized round tables with representatives from the central government and local government, a TV debate with participants from the civil society, state institutions, health sector, the association of the disabled and prepared a study in the form of a bulletin that was distributed to all the relevant actors. A draft-law has also been drafted "On protection of all forms of discrimination in the Republic of Albania" in the context of this work.
