Presentation of the Monitoring Report ( - January-July 2006

The Movement Mjaft presented on 10 October the report of the Project “” for the period January-July 2006 supported by the Open Society Foundation for Albania – Soros. Launched one year ago during the parliamentary election campaign of July 2005, the project aims to provide a systematic and analytical monitoring of both the nationally and the locally elected officials. The results of the first six-months of the monitoring of the Albanian Parliament have been made available both in hard copy and electronically. During the presentation of these findings, Erion Veliaj, Executive Director of the Mjaft Movement said among other things that for the Mjaft Movement democracy is practised every day, not once in four years. Besides the monitoring of the sessions of the Parliament, the report also contains a verification of the election promises against the practical real life achievements of the government; the assets of the Parliamentary Members and their progression over time, the implementation of the Parliament’s rules and regulations, etc. Among the main findings in the Report the following may be underlined:

  • The Democratic Party has only materialised 22 out of the 115 legal initiatives;
  • The Socialist Party has materialised 32 initiatives, but none initiated by the socialist parliamentary group;
  • The Parliament is the only one in Europe which provides each of the deputies with a car and a driver;
  • In the Albanian Parliament the number of former policemen amounts to three times over the number of political science graduates;
  • Women make up only 7 per cent of the deputies in the Parliament , i.e., less than any other country in Europe.
